Keeping your clubs clean on tour

/

We all know that we should be doing a better job of keeping our clubs cleaned and their grooves sharpened. Dirty grooves can take 7mph off the ball speed and a reduction in 52.5% in backspin. But it can be hard to keep them clean whilst on a golf tour.

Your roommate may not appreciate you using the bathroom basin to clean your dirty clubs or to have your clubs and shoes loose around the motel room. Here are some tips to help when you are on a golf trip.

This is a good tip for keeping your clubs and your ball clean during a round. Soak one corner of your towel with water and use it to clean your clubs after you use it. Wet grooves are easier to clean out too.  As many golf courses do not have ball washers too, it can be used to take that nasty mud and dirt of your ball as well.

Wipe it in the rough

If you are playing on a particular wet day and the club head gets pretty muddy there is no need to sully your towel that much. Wipe your clubhead in the rough to get the big chunk of mud off and then doing some finer cleaning with a towel or brush.

Also make sure that the club is dry when you put it back in the bag. A dry club face is going to perform much better than a slippery one.

Brush out those grooves

Clip one these things to your bag to keep your club faces reasonably clean and the grooves sharp. Special attention should be given to your wedges and more lofted clubs with the metal brush. Use the horse hair brush for your woods and hybrids.

An important thing to remember is after you have brushed out your club face and done some practice swings through some wet grass, is to use the dry end of your towel before the actual shot. The pros do this and you will get better contact and and more spin.

Don't forget your grips

Especially after a hot day or successive hot days on a golf tour, your sweat can affect how well your grips can work. Get a coarse brush and some warm water and brush those grips.

Some people even use a light sandpaper to bring their grips back to life. Always remember after that to dry your grips thoroughly.

Also what about your shoes?

If your clubs are dirty, your shoes will be worse. Brush off the loose debris from your shoes, if you changing out of them and wipe them down with the wet part of your golf towel.

If the inners are wet, put some newspaper in them overnight. Maybe also have a 2nd pair of shoes available.

Something new...

water brush

A product that I have started seeing on golfer’s bags is a combination water pump and brush. Can be a good one to get that double action of washing the face and clean out the grooves done quickly. Maybe if the family is struggling to think of a gift for you around Christmas?
